Toastmasters International - Smedley Award
Have you heard of the Toastmasters International Smedley Award?
If yes, great! You can start doing your part to inspire people to be apart of the Toastmasters' journey. If not, scroll down to find out more.
Program Dates: August 1 – September 30
It all began in 1924. Ralph Smedley invited a few men to meet in the Santa Ana, California YMCA where he conducted the first meeting of what would eventually evolve into Toastmasters International. One person initiated a program that would go on to affect millions of people. In his honor, can your club add five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30? By doing so you’ll qualify to receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon to display on your club’s banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between August 1 and September 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than September 30. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be no later than September. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order. Discount code expires six months from date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.
The Highlights of the Division B Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest
25 September 2010, all the effort of Division B Council Members in organizing Division B Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest had finally materialized at 2.00pm, Kolej Putra Interlek, Puchong. Hooray!!!!

Despite the wet, rainy afternoon, the ambient in Division B Humorous Speech & Evaluation contest was warmth by the arrival of our District Governor, L. Thannimalai DTM, Immediate Past District Governor Ritchie Chong DTM, Division C Governor NK Valliiammai ACG CL, Division W Governor Vincent Hor DTM, Division M Governor Koh Siew Keng CC ALB, District Club
Extension Chair Francis Ng DTM, District Club Cloach Chair Sue Ding DTM, District Pidato Coordinator Zaharah Ibrahim DTM and most importantly, all the distinguished audience, near and far, that came to support the contestants.
The whole afternoon started with our stylish Toastmasters Of The Day, G. Sivalingam DTM leading all of us into the exciting Humorous Speech Contest chaired by Christine Lum, followed by Evaluation Speech Contest chaired by Johnson Yike.
In the Humorous Speech Contest, all the five contestants never failed to tickle our funny bones; the audience never stop laughing all the way from the Korean Drama, how Toastmasters transformed into Transformers, the precious Children Sex Education story, the mother-in-law lessons and the ‘stinky’ but ‘unbelievable’ Yunnan trip experience. The judges and audience laughed so much and they decided all of them should be winners. However, being in the contests, they have to choose three winners. Congratulations to the Humorous Speech Contest Winners!! They are:
Champion:
Anna Chin (Phoenix Toastmasters Club)

1st Runner-up:
Muhammad Syafiq Abdullah (Lafarge Toastmasters Club)

2nd Runner-up:
Emil Anthony (MAS Mawar Toastmasters Club)

After a short break, Evaluation Contest Chair, Johnson led us through another exciting roller coaster ride. The appearance of the five contestants set a very serious mood among the audience, everyone was patiently and attentively listening to our contestants one after another, listening to the five ‘Evaluation Kung Fu Master’, eager to learn a skill or two of their ‘Evaluation Kung Fu’. After the tough decision by the judges, the ‘Master of The Master’ in Division B Evaluation Contest was born:
Champion:
Bernard Louis (D’ Utama Advance Toastmasters Club)

1st Runner-up:
Victor Ong Ching Poh (Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club)

2nd Runner-up:
Burney Choo (Kuantan Toastmasters Club)

Phew!! After two exciting roller coaster rides, our most respected, Simple and Humble Division Governor, Thannimalai DTM shared with us how Toastmasters come together as a family by each and everyone of us extent our helping hands to one another and make a WONDERFUL TOASTMASTRERS JOURNEY! The whole event ended with high note from our dearest Division B Governor Irene Lee and not forgetting to remind us that our journey will continue and the big family of Division B will meet up again in TLI 2 on 4th December 2010.

Very soon, Division B Humorous Speech And Evaluation Contest concluded at about 5pm. All guest returned home with satisfying smiles on their face and with a pack of CAFÉ 21 in their hands. Division B would like to take this opportunity to also extend our utmost appreciation to LAM SOON EDIBLE OILS SDN. BHD for sponsoring the CAFÉ 21 gift packs for our guest!!!! For those who stayed a little bit later, we also had a small BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION for our BIRTHDAY BOY, Area B2 Governor, Han Lee Hwee!!! Division B would also like to thank all the role players and guest for supporting Division B Humorous Speech Contest. Without your support, Division B Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest will never be SUCCESSFUL!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!! Wish all continue to enjoy a WONDERFUL TOASTMASTERS JOURNEY!!
We shall meet again at Division B TLI 2….. Bye….

As many of you already know through my opening speech, the main event that inspired me to join Toastmasters was a Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest in 2006. I hope that after witnessing the CHAMPIONS perform, you will not only be inspired to join Toastmasters (if you're not a member yet), but also be inspired to DISCOVER THE CHAMPION WITHIN YOU!
See you at the Genting Semi-annual Convention on 23rd October!

Two weeks after Divison B HSEC
It’s been about two weeks, however the event is still fresh in my head, mainly because I was the Organizing Chair. This was the first time I organized an event of that size that involved so many Toastmasters clubs. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the Division B Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest that took place on the 18th October 2008 at Sunway University College.
We had five contestants for each respective contest (who were they? Here). The contestants tickled our funny bones, and got our undivided attention by their memorizing evaluations. In the end, two individuals stood out and become the Champions of Division B. They are respectively:
District 51 Division B Humorous Speech Contest Winner: Sagadevan Singaravelu
Club Number: 5611
Club Name : MAS Mawar Toastmasters Club
District 51 Evaluation Contest Winner: Jessy Chahal
Club Number 5912
Club Name: D'Utama Toastmasters Club

The first runner up to the Humorous Speech Contest is Dennis Wee (D'Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club). He is also the second runner up for the Evaluation Contest.

The second runner up for the Humorous Speech Contest is Chris Chen Siew Yoke (MAS Cempaka Toastmasters Club)

The first runner up for the Evaluation Contest is Kay Wong (Taman Indrahana Toastmasters Club)

Gathering feedback from the audience and role players, I summarized that the event was indeed a successful event with a turn out of approximately 100 people, all nicely packed in Auditorium G. This accomplishment is definitely not the work of only one man and as such I wish to thank the Chief Judge, DTM Ramdas Nayar, his team of mysterious Judges, and my Role players. This indeed is a memorable experience for me and it’s definitely one worthy to be concluded with a smile.
