URGENT UPDATE : No "Fee Concession"

Dear Division Governors and Area Governors,

Greetings from Las Vegas!

DG Sue Chan, LGET Ramdas and I are burdened with the updated news from TI here in Las Vegas, that all membership renewals for Oct 2011 to March 2012, remains at USD36.

Our past Region Advisor's earlier communication with a TI official indicated that clubs renewing membership dues before 30th Sept 2011 would enjoy the old rate of USD27 for 6 months. The District received the news with much delight. Bearing in mind that DG, LGET and I would be away for 10 days, we thought it was best to inform you early so that you could start encouraging clubs and members to take advantage of the "fee concession".

During the senior officers training at TI convention, we realised there were various interpretations to the fee increase. Our concerns grew when we were not able to get any firm confirmation, as all the TI staff were so busy managing the convention.

Finally Sue got to meet the manager in-charge of membership, Darci Maenpa, on 16th Aug (Tue).

The truth hurts. We are truly disappointed that there is no "fee concession".

The DG, LGET and I express our regret on this. We also want you to know that past Region Advisor had worked very hard to get TI to give the best deal for members and clubs in District 51.

Moving on, let us remain cool and stay in control.

There will probably be a lot of enquiries from clubs and members following this. It is unfortunate that the DG, LGET and LGM are not in town to handle all the questions, but we are confident that the Division and Area leaders will handle the situation well.

District leaders, thank you for your patience, understanding and support. The District needs you to keep our members and clubs together especially when the three of us are away.

We will update you with all the details when we are back in Malaysia.

Toastmasters International: Where Leaders Are Made

Fellow Toastmasters,

Good day. Great news as the long awaited re-branding of Toastmasters International has been unveiled!

Read more to find out:

August 17, 2011
Dear Members,

Today is an historic day. This is the day Toastmasters International launches a newly refreshed brand. From our website to our educational materials, pins and awards, everything you see reflects our new look and feel.

Rather than changing fundamentally who we are or the nature of what we do, the new look and feel seeks to maintain brand consistency and fortify our identity; it reaffirms and re-energizes our commitment to the development of communication and leadership skills worldwide while showcasing what makes us unique in the market. The integrity and structure of our clubs, programs and policies are our greatest strength and they remain intact and inviolable. Our core values and culture continue unabated even as we look forward to address the needs of a new generation.

With 86 years of proud tradition behind us and the bright future before us, Toastmasters International thanks all of our members for the essential parts they play in the success of the organization. You carry and sustain the Toastmasters message, helping people gain the competence they need to become confident, bold communicators and successful leaders. It is you who truly makes Toastmasters International a place where leaders are made.

Sincerely,

Pat Johnson Daniel Rex

Advanced Communicator Series

As Toastmasters progressing with our speeches beginning with our 'Competent Communicator' speeches and progressively to our Advanced Communicator speeches, it is important to know what we are getting ourselves into when selecting our advanced manuals.

Hence this post is to provide a list of links to provide useful information (i.e. Overview, Executive Summary, Objectives, and Notes to Evaluators) about the Advanced Communicator (AC) series manuals;

  1. The Entertaining Speaker
  2. Speaking To Inform
  3. Public Relations
  4. Specialty Speeches
  5. Speeches by Management
  6. The Professional Speaker
  7. Technical Presentation
  8. Persuasive Speaking
  9. Communicating on Video
  10. Storytelling
  11. Interpretive Reading
  12. Interpersonal Communication
  13. Special Occasion Speeches
  14. Humorously Speaking

Personally when I attempt the advanced manuals, I will select one manual which I feel to be easy to complete, and another manual which I personally feel will be a challenge to me. I will attempt these two manuals concurrently.

The benefits of this approach are;
  • In the event I get discourage with the 'challenging manual', I can pick myself up by doing a project from the 'easy manual'.
  • It ensures that I continue my speeches and it brings flavor in attempting two different manuals. (e.g. one can be a serious manual like 'Speeches by Management' and the other is lighthearted like 'Storytelling'). Personally, 'Speeches by Management' is the 'easy manual' for me while 'Storytelling' is the challenging one *wink*.
It was definitely an enjoyable journey attempting the manuals I've done thus far, and I'm still continuing my journey by attempting the other manuals (and repeating some that I've 'bomb-ed' before *hehehee*).

Always have fun, and continue the lifelong journey of continuous improvement with Toastmasters.

Yours truly,
Johnson Yike

Revised Toastmasters International Membership Fee

Dear members and friends, kindly transfer and spread the information in regards to the revised dues for the Toastmasters International Membership Fee. Please refer to the official write up below for further information. To download the PDF format of this message, please click on the link provided at the end of this memo.

August 3, 2011
Dear Toastmaster member,

As directed by policy, the Board of Directors periodically reviews membership dues to ensure that the organization can satisfy member needs while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided. After a review of the organization's five-year financial forecast of activities compared with forecasted revenue, the Board has voted to increase membership dues.

As a result, on October 1, 2011 Toastmasters' annual membership dues will increase from $54 (U.S. dollars) to $72 (U.S. dollars), payable in increments of $36 (U.S. dollars) every six months.

Several factors drive this increase:
Member needs are greater than ever.
Since 1995, membership has grown nearly 55%, from 169,330 members in 1995 to 262,000 in 2010. In this same period, annual dues increased only once in 2005 from $36 (U.S. dollars) to $54 (U.S. dollars).
Toastmasters has passed the economy of scale established a decade ago; its support services must expand in order to better serve its ever-expanding member base.
The increased funding will be used to enhance member support and services, and enable the implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan that was developed by the Board of Directors in 2010.

If you have any questions, please review the Frequently Asked Questions document available at www.toastmasters.org/2011duesincrease. If you have further questions, please email duesincrease@toastmasters.org.

Lafarge Malayan Cement Toastmaster Club : Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest

Ladies and Gentlemen, please make yourself available this Wednesday, 10 August 2011 for Lafarge Malayan Cement Toastmasters' Club Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. Details as per below:

Toastmasters International - Smedley Award

If yes, great! You can start doing your part to inspire people to be apart of the Toastmasters' journey. If not, scroll down to find out more.

Program Dates: August 1 – September 30

It all began in 1924. Ralph Smedley invited a few men to meet in the Santa Ana, California YMCA where he conducted the first meeting of what would eventually evolve into Toastmasters International. One person initiated a program that would go on to affect millions of people. In his honor, can your club add five new, dual, or reinstated members between August 1 and September 30? By doing so you’ll qualify to receive a "Smedley Award" ribbon to display on your club’s banner. Membership applications and payment for members who join between August 1 and September 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than September 30. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be no later than September. Transfer and charter members do not count for credit. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order. Discount code expires six months from date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.
